Description of the program:

A. Duration: The diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery is be of three years and six month duration. 6 months exception is given for candidates who have completed ANM from a school recognized by the Indian Nursing Council.

B. Internship Period: Internship period is of 6 months with one month vacation.

C. Course Outline:

I Year:

  1. Biological Sciences - (a) Anatomy and Physiology, (b) Microbiology.
  2. Behavioral Science - (a) Psychology, (b) Sociology.
  3. Fundamentals of Nursing: (a) fundamentals of Nursing, (b) First Aid, (c) Personal Hygeine.
  4. Community Health nursing: (a) Comm.Health Nursing I, (b) Environmental hygeine, (c) Health Education and Communication skills, (d) Nutrition.
  5. English
  6. Kannada

II Year

  1. Medical Surgical Nursing I (including Pharmacology)
  2. Medical Surgical Nursing II (specialities)
  3. Mental Health and Psychiatric nursing
  4. Computer Education.

III year

  1. Midwifery and Gynaecology
  2. Community Health Nursing II
  3. Paediatric Nursing

Internship Period

  1. Educational methods and Media in practise of nursing
  2. Introduction to research
  3. Professional trends and adjustment
  4. Administration and ward management
  5. Health Economics

D. Scheme of Examination:

I year - 4 written papers and 1 practical.

II year - 3 written papers and 2 practicals

III year - 3 written papers and 3 practicals.

Internship - 2 written papers and 1 practical.

Admission to GNM course: Minimum and maximum age is 17 and 35 respectively, completed before 30th September of the year of Admission.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. All students should have passed class XII (or equivalent) with minimum of 45% marks in science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology)
  2. Those who have completed ANM from a school recognized by the Indian nursing council after their 10+2 are eligible and will be given 6 months exception.
  3. Intake of students is only once a year in the month of July.
  4. This course is for women only.

Students may apply on the prescribed form obtainable from the School of Nursing by payment of Rs.200/- by cash or cheque. Candidates awaiting results of the qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply provided they produce their original marks aheet at the time of selection. Shortlisted candidates will be informed by post and through notice board.

Selection Process: the selection process will consist of:

  1. Written examination of two hours duration in the subjects - Physics, chemistry, biology, general Ability, English and general knowledge. Pass mark is 35%
  2. Aptitude test.
  3. Interview.
  4. Medical Examination.
  5. The selection is subject to final approval by the board of nursing education, South India branch, Nurses league, Christian Medical Association of India and Karnataka state nursing council.
