| The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology is a
full-fledged, full-time unit catering to the needs of women during
pregnancy and for other issues relating to reproductive health. The
department was established many decades ago, mainly to serve the
Muslim women who would not consult a male doctor. Even today, they
form the majority of women coming to the department. Quite
appropriately, the hospital has kept up a policy to engage only
women doctors in this department! The department has grown from
small beginnings through the years to its present shape and size, as
a referral ObGyn unit for the smaller hospitals in the area. It is
now a tertiary, teaching unit with facilities to handle high-risk
Obstetric and Gynaecological patients including cancer patients.
The department is headed by Dr. Arulmozhi
Ramarajan, M.D., D.G.O., P.G.D.M.L.E who has over 25 years of experience
in the field. She is ably supported by a team of three assistants,
Dr. Nita Vashist, M.B.,B.S., D.N.B., Dr. Sandhya Toppo, M.B.,B.S.,
D.G.O., and Dr. Angeline Job, M.B.,B.S., D.G.O. The department is
recognized for imparting training to candidates preparing for the
MRCOG Part II examinations of the Royal College of Obstetrics &
Gynaecology, since four years ago. The hospital has an intake of
one candidate per year, for the said course. Currently, the department
has five trainees aspiring to take the MRCOG examinations. They
are, Dr. Swetha Arasu, Dr. Teena Thomas, Dr. Vani, Dr. Arpitha Devaraj
and Dr. Vidya Raj.
The department of Obstetrics &
Gynaecology, on the third floor (B Floor) of the hospital, has a
well-equipped labor ward with facilities for delivering low risk and
high-risk cases. Electronic fetal monitoring and central oxygen
supply are available in the labor room. Good neonatal resuscitation
facility in the labor room and the new-born baby nursery adjacent to
the labor room have contributed to good perinatal outcomes. The
labor room has two independent labor cots. Apart from this, there
are two waiting rooms for observing and monitoring women in early
labor and one special care room for women with risk factors such as
hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, anemia, etc.
The maternity floor has well trained senior
staff nurses and ANMs. Spacious wards are available to patients in
three levels: the general ward, the semiprivate ward and the special
ward.
The department is well supported round the
clock by fully equipped and air-conditioned operation theatres, ICU,
laboratory and ambulance services to be able to handle high risk and
referred cases at any time. |
