The Geriatric Ward is not an Old People's Home but a ward in the hospital where bedridden old people are cared for. With nuclear families becoming the norm in most households, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the children to look after their aged parents at home. The CSI Hospital became sensitized to this need of the community and established a Geriatric Ward beginning with just two beds. Word soon spread around and more people began to come in. As the need became more a separate ward in the fourth floor of the hospital was developed into a full-fledged Geriatric Ward. There are now 26 beds in the ward and the demand for these beds is so much that there is now a waiting list for admissions into the ward. The inmates are provided with nursing, emotional and supportive care. The physician visits the ward everyday to provide for their medical needs. A Community Geriatric Health Care Training Program was started in the year 1999 in order to train young men and women to take care of old people who have special needs. The course is for 10 months at the end of which an exam is conducted. Certificates are issued to successful candidates. The Geriatric Ward is open to all people who are old and unable to take care of themselves, regardless of their caste, religion or creed. Before admission to the Ward the prospective inmate is admitted in the regular hospital ward to assess his/her physical condition. During this period he/she will have to pay the regular ward charges and other charges charges applicable. Once this is through he/she is taken into the Geriatric Ward. Before admission into the Geriatric Ward a refundable advance of about Rs. 35000/- (Rupees Thirty Five Thousand) will have to be paid. Further, the legal gaurdian will have to sign a prescribed form of consent and other documentation required for the care of the inmate. The monthly bill which is revised by the management periodically will have to be cleared by the 10th of every month In cases of illness the inmate will be transferred to a general ward of intensive care unit depending upon the medical condition and treated like any other patient. The charges for this would be extra as applicable to any other hospital patient.
